Police in Michigan are investigating the death of a newborn baby found in a portable potty at a music festival over the weekend.

“Michigan State Police can confirm that the body of a neonate was found in a portable restroom in the camping area at the Electric Forest festival Sunday morning,” officers posted on social media

The word “neonate,” which caused some confusion online, refers to a baby in its first four weeks of life.

Authorities said the body recovered at the festival in western Michigan was found by a restroom vending company employee performing routine maintenance.

The discovery was made on the final day of the four-day event in Rothbury, Mich. That day’s show featured musical acts including Canadian pop group Bombargo, New York City’s Frost Children and Irish band Bricknasty.

Police said in a pair of X posts on Sunday that their investigation is ongoing. They’re asking for anyone with information to come forward. Heavy traffic in the area was expected Monday as attendees made their way home.

Event organizers shared news of Sunday’s grisly discovery on social media.

“Forest Family, it causes us so much pain to have to share this difficult news with you,” Forest Festival officials posted on Instagram.

Organizers said they’re “heartbroken” and asked festival-goers to contact law enforcement with information that could be helpful.

Michigan State Police didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
